PhPress.org: PhPress for Windows   http://www.phpress.org/

PhPress does'nt work correctly under MS-Windows.

PhPress needs some POSIX binaries on the server side to convert and resize the daily-papers pages. I can't make those binaries work under Windows, so 80% of the functionnalities of PhPress can't work. I don't use this OS myself, so it was very difficult and quite useless to continue to code such a compatible application, which was creating a lot of trouble for nothing.

You may want to use Windows + Firefox as a client computer, but in my opinion you'll get better result with a MacOSX computer.

If you absolutely need to use PhPress under MS-Windows because you want to scan a newspaper with a specific scanner (i.e. an old microfilm scanner) which cannot work under MacOS or Linux, you can try to:

- Download EasyPHP 1.8

- Replace the default php.ini file by this one

- Install PhPress

- Use the 'Scan' tool to index the pages as TIFF images (don't try to convert them into PNG, it will not work)

- Make some backup CDs with the tool provided by PhPress

- Load the backup CDs in a PhPress system running under Linux or MacOSX.

- You'll be able to convert the files into PNG format, then to use the analysis system.

I did so in 2004-2005 to scan three years of the journal L'Eclaireur de Nice with an old Minolta microfilm scanner. I did'nt find any solution to use it with a Mac or Linux, and even the Windows driver was very hard to find. I only used Windows 2K, I don't know if this solution will work under other MS systems. I can't provide more help to Windows users.
